Take Things Slow with New Dentures

Posted on 7/28/2015 by Todd Jorgenson
A pair of dentures floating in a glass jar. When you first get your dentures, your life is going to need some adjusting. Unlike your natural teeth, you will not be able to eat your regular foods or talk the same as you did right away; this comes with practice! The important thing is that you give yourself time to get used to them and the patience to persevere. Eventually, your dentures will become like another natural part of your body and you will not have to think so much when eating or talking.

The First Stage
Immediately following the placement of dentures, you should ease back into your diet. Because your mouth is not used to the appliance, your tongue will naturally try to force them out. This means that if you chew excessively chewy foods, your dentures might not stay in place, which can cause embarrassment and difficulty for you down the road. In order to prevent this, simply choose soft, easy to eat foods for the first few months of having dentures.

Believe it or not, talking and laughing will take some adjusting to as well. You will want to practice talking in a way that your tongue does not force the dentures forward. This can cause the embarrassing slipping or clicking of the dentures, neither of which you want to experience. Take your time at home talking, yawning, and laughing to see how the dentures will react.

After a few weeks, you will be used to your dentures and be able to use them as you see fit. Remember, if you have any trouble, please call us for help in order to get the most comfortable with your dentures.
