Sinus Lift Mesa, AZ

A smiling mouth after a Sinus Lift in Mesa, AZDental implants are the ideal solution for patients who are missing one or more teeth. However, there are certain criteria that must be met to receive an implant. If you are in need of an implant but do not meet the criteria, you may be eligible for a sinus lift operation. A sinus lift is a surgical procedure that adds bone to your upper jaw and the maxillary sinuses on either side of your nose.

At East Valley Implant & Periodontal Center, patient safety is our number one priority. A sinus lift is a safe and secure way to ensure the success of a dental implant.

Uses For Sinus Lift

If you are currently ineligible to receive an implant, a sinus lift can greatly improve your chances. A sinus lift can be used to treat the following issues:

•  Replace bone that may have been lost because of periodontal (gum) disease.
•  Treat bone deterioration caused by tooth loss. Once your teeth are gone, the bone in your jaw will slowly resorb back into the bloodstream. If deterioration becomes severe, there may not be enough bone to support an implant.
•  Increase bone quantity in the posterior region of the mouth. Because of our cranial anatomy, many people who have lost their upper molars do not have enough natural bone to place an implant.
•  Improve the size and shape of the maxillary sinuses. Some patients may have sinuses that are too close to the upper jaw for an implant to be placed.

Preparation for Sinus lift

The bone used to perform a sinus lift may come from your own body, a donor, or synthetic sources. If your bone is used, it will be taken from other areas of your mouth or bone rich areas like your hip or tibia.

X-rays and 3D scans will be taken before the procedure to help Dr. Todd Jorgenson gather a greater understanding of your jaw and sinuses. Our state-of-the-art technology allows us to gather precise information without the use of invasive procedures.

Sinus Lift Procedure

During your surgery, Dr. Todd Jorgenson makes an incision where your back teeth used to be. The tissue will be raised to expose the bone. A small window is made of the bone to access the membrane that lines your sinuses. The membrane is gently lifted up, creating a bigger space between your sinus and jaw.

The space in between the membrane and bone will be packed with the bone-graft material. The amount of material we use will vary, but it is just a few millimeters. Once the material is in place, Dr. Todd Jorgenson will suture the tissue back together.

After a Sinus Lift

After the procedure, you may experience some swelling and minor bleeding. Dr. Todd Jorgenson may suggest a saline spray to keep the inner lining of your nose wet. We may also prescribe medication to prevent inflammation, congestion, and alleviate pain. The procedure is relatively minor, and most patients experience little discomfort.

Once the new bone material is in place, it may take four to nine months for implantation to be possible. The bony material must harden and integrate with your jaw to create a strong foundation for the implant.
