The Impact Gum Disease Has On The Happiness Of Your Mouth

Posted on 6/20/2019 by Todd Jorgenson
The Impact Gum Disease Has On The Happiness Of Your MouthReceding gums are no laughing matter, they can lead to pain and sensitivity in your mouth, not to mention decay and even tooth loss. We take periodontal disease very seriously here in our office, and we believe that you should too.

A Healthy Mouth is a Happy Mouth

If you do have periodontal disease which is the medical term for gum disease, one of the first signs is receding gums. A healthy mouth looks, well, healthy. The gums are pink and the gum line will appear consistent around all of your teeth. When you visit our office for your checkups, we measure the space between the crown of your tooth and the root below the gum line, this essentially measures the gum and confirms that they are either healthy or receding.

When gums recede, it can get ugly in your mouth, and we are not just talking about appearance. While receding gums are unsightly, they are also harmful to your teeth and can even be painful. As the gums recede, they leave little spaces beneath the gum line where bacteria, plaque and tartar can get in and build up.

This build up begins eroding the enamel of your teeth and since it is below the gum line, can be difficult to clean. This leads to painful infection and eventually tooth loss. It is imperative that if you are at risk for developing gum disease, either from poor oral health care, smoking or tobacco use or even genetics, that you keep regularly scheduled cleanings and checkups with our office.

We do not want you to suffer from the pain of receding gum lines, and that is why we want to work with you to ensure that your oral health is in good standing. Please call us if you think that you may be at risk for periodontal disease and we will see you soon for a checkup.
